Before you apply

The requirements and process for obtaining or changing a Type Certification can be broken down into 6 steps:

1. classifying the proposed changes based on the applicable regulations
2. applying and establishing a basis to certify
3. establishing means of compliance and our level of involvement
4. demonstrating and recording compliance
5. approving the Type design or change to it
6. following post certification responsibilities

Information you need to apply

To apply for a type certificate, you will need to submit:

• a completed Type Certificate Application Form
• a description of the aeronautical product including a description of its main design features and specifications
  • if you’re applying to certify an aircraft:
    • a three-view drawing of the aircraft
    • the preliminary data on the aircraft’s design and performance
    • the aircraft’s proposed operating characteristics and limitations
  • if you’re applying to certify an aircraft engine or propeller:
    • a general arrangement drawing of the engine or propeller
    • the engine or propeller’s proposed operating characteristics and limitations
• a proposed certification basis
• a certification plan that includes:
  • how you will show that the aeronautical product meets the applicable certification basis
  • documentation that shows how the product meets the applicable certification basis
• the resources you will need to show that the product meets the conformity referred to in section 521.28 of the Canadian Aviation Regulation
• the schedule for showing that the product meets the conformity requirements the basis of your certification under Section 521.30 of the Canadian Aviation Regulations, including any standards that you will voluntarily comply with
• a list of any special conditions, findings of equivalent safety or exemptions that you are requesting
