About the airport
The Wemindji Airport is located on the east coast of James Bay and primarily serves the Cree community of Wemindji.
As part of the commitments under the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, the Department of Transport and the Government of Quebec agreed in 1983 to build 11 airports in northern Quebec, including Wemindji.
Transport Canada continues to operate the airport, while day-to-day maintenance of the airport conducted by the Cree Nation of Wemindji. The airport is designated as a remote airport under the National Airports Policy.
