Mandate:
The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (the Authority) is a Crown corporation responsible for securing specific elements of the air transportation system – from passenger and baggage screening to screening airport workers.
The Authority’s responsibilities fall into four major categories:
- Pre-board screening of passengers and their belongings;
- Hold baggage screening through explosives detection systems at airports;
- Non-passenger screening of those entering restricted airport areas; and
- Restricted Area Identity Card implementation and management.
The Authority relies on appropriations to cover its expenses. In fiscal year 2023/24 the Authority has $1,074.5 million in total funding available to fund its operations.
