Approval of a design of a pressure tank

A pressure vessel is any tank listed in Clause 5.1.1.2 or 6 of CSA B620, except for Specification TC 44 tanks.

Once the applicant has completed the design and made sure it meets all the requirements of CSA B620, they must prepare and send the full design package — including calculations, drawings, and other documents — to a Transport Canada Design Review Agency.

The Design Review Agency will check the design to make sure it follows CSA B620. This is a paid service provided for the applicant. After the review, the agency will give the applicant a written report confirming whether the design meets the standard.

The applicant can be a tank manufacturer, assembler, or modifier. The review must cover everything the applicant did as part of the design.

If the report confirms that the tank meets the CSA B620 requirements, the applicant must submit an application form and include the report to Transport Canada to register a design and obtain a Transport Canada Registration Number (TCRN).

This TCRN must be marked on the metal identification plate of every tank built using that design.

Approval of a design of a non-pressure tank

A Design Engineer registered by Transport Canada must review the tank design in accordance with CSA B620. If the design is found to satisfy all the applicable requirements of the CSA B620 standard the manufacturer or modifier must then issue a unique manufacturer's or modifier’s design identification number (MDIN) for that tank design which is required to be marked on the metal identification or modification plate.

Registration

Registering a design or a facility (manufacture, assemble, modify, repair, test and inspect), a design review agency, a training organization or a design engineer

To register, the applicant must submit a completed application form. Once issued, the Certificate of Registration is valid for five years, after which the facility must apply for renewal:

Amending, renewing or cancelling a registration

To amend, renew or cancel a registration (including adding, changing or deleting a design) the applicant must submit a completed application form:
