Means of containment that can be used for transportation of diesel and gasoline

Transport Canada has been informed of the use of non-compliant fuel oil and water tank combinations by companies specialized in road construction. This page provides a number of options for transporting diesel and gasoline by road in Canada.

Background

The CSA B620 and CSA B621 highway and portable tank Standards were first published in 1987 and have been revised over the years. Some non-specification highway tanks were recognized by the CSA B621 standard, allowing them to be used in dangerous goods service until the end of 2016. This was done to allow industry time to replace their non-specification tanks and transition to standardized tanks.

By the end of 2017, all non-specification fuel tanks should have been removed from dangerous goods service. They can no longer be used to transport dangerous goods such as diesel fuel, gasoline or tars.

Options for compliance

The current Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations (TDG) require diesel fuel to be transported in a standardized means of containment (MOC). The listed options (below) are the only ones that can be used for transportation of diesel and gasoline in Canada.

The TDG Regulations refer to various published CSA and CGSB safety standards which cover various aspects of transport. These standards specify which containers can be used, and how they must be used. Under the TDG Regulations, these requirements apply, even when a residual amount is contained in the tank (10% or less).

There are a number of options for transporting diesel and gasoline by road in Canada:

Please note that TC44 tanks are permitted for use with diesel fuel only at this time.

There are some exemptions in the Part 1 of the TDG Regulations which cover special cases.

Please review the information on our website for more information about containers that must be used when transporting dangerous goods. The requirements of each container type are accessible using the list on the right hand side of this webpage.
