TP 14541 – Lateral Buoys and Standard Daybeacons (2022)

 

Lateral Buoys

Graphics shows the different types of lateral buoys and what actions the boat operator should take.
Bifurcation (red and green bands)
You may pass this buoy on either side when moving upstream. The colour of the top band shows which is the main or preferred channel. For example: keep this buoy on your starboard (right) side.
Port (green can)
Keep this buoy on your port (left) side when going upstream.
Port (green pillar)
Keep this buoy on your port (left) side when going upstream.
Port (green spar)
Keep this buoy on your port (left) side when going upstream.
Starboard (red spar)
Keep this buoy on your starboard (right) side when going upstream.
Starboard (red conical)
Keep this buoy on your starboard (right) side when going upstream.
Starboard (red pillar)
Keep this buoy on your starboard (right) side when going upstream.
Fairway
Fairway buoy is shown with the buoy divided vertically in half with white on one half and red on the other. This buoy can be safely passed on either side.
This buoy marks safe water at landfalls, channel entrances or channel centres. While it may be passed on either side, it should be kept to the port (left) side when going in either direction.
Isolated Danger
Isolated danger buoy is shown with a red band between two black bands. The graphic shows the buoy should be kept on the port side when heading upstream or downstream.
This buoy marks an isolated danger, such as a small shoal or a wreck, that has navigable water all around it. Consult the chart to learn the size, depth, etc. of the danger.

Standard Daybeacons

Port Hand
Port hand daybeacon is shown by a white square with a green border and a black square in the center.
When going upstream, keep a port hand daybeacon on your port (left) side.
Junction (Preferred channel to right)
Junction daybeacon – preferred channel is to the right is shown by a white diamond with a red border and a green square in the center.
This daybeacon marks a point where the channel divides and may be passed on either side. If you want to take the channel to your right, keep this daybeacon on your port (left) side.
Junction (Preferred channel to left)
Junction daybeacon – preferred channel is to the left is shown by a white diamond with a red border and a red triangle in the center.
This daybeacon marks a point where the channel divides and may be passed on either side. If you want to take the channel to your left, keep this daybeacon on your starboard (right) side.
Starboard Hand
Starboard hand daybeacon is shown by a white triangle with a red border and a red triangle in the center.
When going upstream, keep a starboard hand daybeacon on your starboard (right) side.
