Frequently asked questions about the end of the iMHZEV Program

These are the most frequently asked questions about the end of the Incentives for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicles (iMHZEV) Program. You can search for keywords in the “Filter items” search bar.

Question & Answer
1. How did the incentive program work?

The incentive was applied at the point-of-sale by the dealership or other authorized sellers such as automakers and/or vehicle finishers/distributors once eligibility was confirmed. The Organization Consent Form was needed as part of the eligibility confirmation. Once eligibility was confirmed, organizations needed to complete the Incentive Received Form and then, the incentive then appeared directly on the bill of sale or lease agreement of the eligible MHZEVs. Taxes and fees were applied by the dealership to the purchase or lease before applying the incentive. Purchasing/leasing organizations were not required to make a deposit to receive the incentive, and the incentive was not reimbursed in the form of a cheque at a later date.

The dealership must submit the required documentation to be reimbursed for an incentive provided to an eligible recipient organization at the point-of-sale. Recipient organizations cannot submit a request for reimbursement, only dealerships registered with the Program can.

The federal incentive for eligible MHZEVs is applied in addition to any provincial or territorial incentive offered up to a maximum of 75% of the respective vehicles Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP).

2. When did the iMHZEV Program end?

The iMHZEV Program officially ended at midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST) on March 31st, 2026. Dealerships, authorized sellers or OEMs had to submit the eligibility assessments before this time to secure the funding for the incentives they have offered to customers. There are no exceptions to this deadline.

3. What happens if a claim was submitted but not completed before March 31st, 2026?

Dealerships can access the online ZEV portal after the end of the Program. Dealerships will have until midnight EST on September 30th, 2026 to complete claims that were successfully submitted before the end of the program.

4. What if I purchased a vehicle before March 31st but it wasn’t delivered until after the Program ended?

If you purchased an eligible vehicle and your dealership successfully submitted an eligibility assessment before the end of the Program, you will receive the incentive as long as:

  • the eligibility criteria are met,
  • the vehicle is delivered, and
  • the reimbursement request is completed before midnight EST on September 30th, 2026.

If you have any concerns, please contact Program support at iMHZEVProgram-ProgrammeIVMLZE@tc.gc.ca.

5. Will I get the incentive if I ordered a vehicle before the end of the Program, but the dealership didn’t submit the eligibility assessment?

No. If you ordered an eligible vehicle before the end of the Program but your dealership, authorized seller or OEM didn’t submit an eligibility assessment application before the end of the Program, you won’t be eligible for the incentive.

6. Can I still contact the iMHZEV Program for questions or support?

Yes. You may email the Program at iMHZEVProgram-ProgrammeiVMLZE@tc.gc.ca.

7. Does the government plan to reintroduce incentives for electric vehicles?

The Government of Canada continues to explore ways to support consumers, benefit Canadian workers and strengthen domestic supply chains.

Generic to the iMHZEV Program

These are the most frequently asked questions about the Incentives for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicles (iMHZEV) Program. You can search for keywords in the “Filter items” search bar.

Question & Answer
1. Were demonstrator vehicles eligible?

For the purposes of the iMHZEV Program, eligible zero emission demonstrator vehicles were considered new vehicles and were eligible for the incentive as long as the odometer reading was less than 10,000 km.

2. Were plug-in hybrids or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles eligible?

Yes, these vehicles were eligible under the iMHZEV Program.

3. Were off-road vehicles eligible?

No, off-road vehicles were not eligible under the iMHZEV program.

4. Were pick-up trucks eligible?

Yes, pick-up truck models (in Class 2B and higher) were eligible under the iMHZEV Program. Pick-up trucks in Class 2B and 3 that met the program’s commercial vehicle criteria could have been eligible for incentives of up to $10,000 and $40,000 respectively.

Pick-up truck models that were considered medium-duty passenger vehicles (MDPVs) (vehicles that did not meet the commercial vehicle criteria) were eligible for an incentive of up to $5,000 and were subject to a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) cap of $100,000.

5. What criteria had to be met for a vehicle to be considered a commercial vehicle?

Vehicles in Class 2B and 3 were considered commercial vehicles if the model meets one or more of the following criteria:

  1. had a seating capacity of 9 passengers or more;
  2. had a cargo area (for example, a pick-up truck box or bed) with a minimum length of 183 cm measured throughout the cargo area. For pick-up trucks, the truck box or bed length had to be measured from the inside of the bulkhead (excluding passenger cabin) to the inside of the closed tailgate; or
  3. was a truck with container attachment capabilities (for example, chassis cab, half truck).
6. Were leased vehicles eligible for an incentive?

Yes, the incentive could have been applied to vehicles leased for 12 months or more, however the incentive amount would have been prorated (adjusted) for leases under 48 months. For example, a 48-month lease was eligible for the full incentive, while a vehicle with a 24-month lease was eligible for half the incentive.

Please see the eligible vehicles page for a full list of incentive amounts by vehicle and lease term.

* Class 2B and 3 vehicles must have met the Program’s commercial vehicle criteria to have been eligible for these incentives. Class 2B and 3 vehicles that didn’t meet these criteria were considered medium-duty passenger vehicles (MDPV) and were eligible for the above identified (MDPV) incentives and subject to an MSRP cap of $100,000.

For lease terms not listed in the table, use the following formula to find the appropriate incentive level.

(full incentive amount of the eligible MHZEV ÷ 48) x (number of months of the lease)

7. Were used medium- and-heavy-duty zero-emission vehicles (MHZEVs) eligible?

No, only new MHZEVs were eligible. New vehicles were ones that had not been plated before, except for demonstration vehicles. Demonstrator vehicles could have been registered and plated to the dealership/authorized seller for demonstration purposes prior to being registered and plated to the eligible recipient organization.

8. Were public transit and school buses eligible?

No. The iMHZEV Program excluded vehicles intended for public transit and school transportation due to coverage under other federal programs provided through Infrastructure Canada. Similar vehicle types, such as shuttle buses, may have been eligible if purchased for other means, such as for use by private businesses. Please visit Infrastructure Canada for more information on the Zero Emission Transit Fund.

Vehicles of the transit/shuttle bus type were eligible to receive incentives under the iMHZEV program if they were not intended for public transit use and no other federal funding was being sought for those vehicles.

9. Were there any fees associated with the iMHZEV Program?

There were no fees associated with the iMHZEV Program. Dealerships and authorized sellers couldn’t charge additional fees under the iMHZEV Program. If they charged fees, Transport Canada could have removed them from the Program.

All fees and costs, like freight and delivery charges, should have been similar to the fees and costs for vehicles sold outside of the Program.

If a dealership wants to charge, or has charged fees for the iMHZEV Program, please email Transport Canada: IMHZEVProgram-ProgrammeIVMLZE@tc.gc.ca.

Number 10. Were vehicles purchased or leased outside of Canada eligible?

No, only new vehicles purchased or leased in Canada from a licensed dealer or authorized seller were eligible.

Number 11. Did the iMHZEV Program have a minimum purchase or fleet requirement?

No. There was no minimum purchase or minimum fleet size required for the iMHZEV Program.

Number 12. In the instance of a multi-stage manufactured vehicle, in some cases the final stage manufacturer was the seller, rather than the chassis dealer. Could either entity register with Transport Canada as the authorized seller?

Both a manufacturer and a chassis dealer could enroll with Transport Canada as authorized sellers, however, only the entity that sold/leased the vehicle to the eligible purchaser/lessee could provide the incentive and be reimbursed by Transport Canada.

Number 13. Could more vehicles be added to the list of eligible vehicles?

No, vehicles cannot be added to this the list of eligible vehicles as the iMHZEV Program ended on March 31, 2026. Here is the List of Eligible Vehicles that were eligible under the iMHZEV Program.

Number 14. Could an individual have received an incentive from the iMHZEV Program?

No. Individuals were not eligible to receive an incentive under the iMHZEV Program.

Number 15. Did I have to finance the purchase of an eligible vehicle to receive the incentive?

No, both cash purchases and financed purchases (as well as leases of at least 12 months) were eligible.

Number 16. Did the iMHZEV Program have price caps?

Yes, medium-duty passenger vehicles (i.e., vehicles under Classes 2B and 3 that do not meet the program’s commercial vehicle criteria) were subject to a Manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) cap of $100,000. Vehicle models that exceeded this cap were not eligible for an incentive under the iMHZEV Program. The MSRP cap did not apply to vehicles included in Class 2B and 3 that met the commercial criteria as well as vehicles included in classes 4 to 8.

Number 17. Who was eligible to receive an iMHZEV incentive and was there a limit on how many vehicles could be purchased or leased under the iMHZEV Program?

Organizations that were eligible are listed below and could receive up to 10 incentives or a maximum of $1,000,000 per calendar year (whichever camefirst). More specifically:

  • Organization and business limits were applied at an organization level, rather than by department or division. Organizations and businesses that shared common ownership, other than common ownership as a result of being a publicly traded company, were considered as one single organization eligible for a combined total of 10 incentives or a maximum of $1,000,000 per calendar year (whichever came first);
  • Indigenous communities and not-for-profit organizations, including charities could participate in the iMHZEV Program as long as they were registered; and
  • Limits for provincial, territorial and municipal governments with fleets were applied by level of government, rather than by organization. This means that each provincial, territorial or municipal fleet could use no more than 10 incentives or a maximum of $1,000,000 per calendar year (whichever came first).

Unused incentives could not be carried into future calendar years.

The iMHZEV Program monitors the incentives limits closely. Canada reserves the right to seek reimbursement should a recipient be found to have received more than the eligible number of incentives from the iMHZEV Program in a calendar year.

Number 18. How could I have known the maximum eligible incentive amount for a specific vehicle?

By referring to the list of eligible vehicles, you could see the maximum eligible incentive amount per vehicle.

Number 19. How did it work with other provincial/territorial incentive programs?

The federal incentive could be combined with any provincial/territorial incentive offered up to 75% of the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of the vehicle.

Number 20. How do I know which vehicles were eligible?

The iMHZEV Program has a list of all eligible vehicles that were eligible and their respective eligibility dates (the date in which they became eligible for an incentive).

In order for a vehicle to have been eligible for an iMHZEV incentive, the entire vehicle description had to appear on the list of eligible vehicles including the year, make, model and configuration of the vehicle. Only vehicles purchased/leased and delivered on or after the vehicles respective eligibility date we re eligible for the incentive.

Number 21. I was charged fees to process the iMHZEV incentive. What should I do?

If a dealership/authorized seller wants to charge, or has charged fees for the iMHZEV Program, please email Transport Canada: IMHZEVProgram-ProgrammeIVMLZE@tc.gc.ca.

Number 22. If I bought or leased an eligible vehicle on or after the respective eligibility date, how do I get the incentive?

The dealership/authorized seller had to submit and obtain an eligibility assessment on the recipient organization’s behalf before the delivery of the vehicle and providing an incentive. You would have needed to sign an Organization Consent Form for this step. Once the eligibility wasconfirmed (valid for 90 days), the incentive would have been applied directly on the sale/lease agreement at the point-of-sale, after taxes and fees were applied to the vehicle. This allowed organizations to benefit immediately from the incentive when buying or leasing an eligible vehicle.

Purchasing/leasing organizations could not apply for the incentive on their own. Only dealerships/authorized sellers could submit incentive requests for reimbursement for an incentive provided at the point-of-sale.

Number 23. iMHZEV Online Portal: I forgot my username or password for my iMHZEV Portal account, what do I do?

If you’re having problems connecting to your account and would like step-by-step instructions on how to address this, please email IMHZEVProgram-ProgrammeIVMLZE@tc.gc.ca.

Number 24. What if the purchasing/leasing organization didn’t receive the incentive at the point-of-sale?

If the purchasing/leasing organization didn’t receive the incentive on an eligible vehicle purchased or leased on or after the date listed on the eligibility vehicle list, they must contact the dealership/authorized seller so the incentive can be provided.

The dealership/authorized seller must provide the incentive after taxes and fees have been applied to the purchase or lease.  If the purchase or lease agreement has already been signed, they may provide the incentive via cheque or a similar mechanism. The purchasing/leasing organization will need to complete and sign the Organization Consent Form and the Incentive Received Form.

Only a dealership/authorized seller can submit incentive requests for reimbursement. Purchasing/leasing organizations cannot apply directly for reimbursement.

Number 25. What are the timelines for taking advantage of the iMHZEV Program?

The iMHZEV Program ended on March 31, 2026. No more submissions are accepted.

Number 26. Who could submit an incentive request for reimbursement?

Only dealerships and authorized sellers could submit incentive requests for reimbursement by September 30, 2026.
