How do we keep Canadian waters safe from oil spills? Let’s take a look... behind the scenes.

Canadian authorities keep a close watch on ships moving through our waters.

Through the National Aerial Surveillance Program, specially equipped aircraft patrol the skies...

We also use Environment Canada’s state-of-the-art technology to identify spills from satellite images.

The Aerial Surveillance program currently flies more than two thousand patrol hours per year. Long-term funding has boosted surveillance efforts with a focus on the waters in northern British Columbia and off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Increasing aerial surveillance is just one of the ways we’re keeping our waters safe. .
