Creating a national oil spill research program

During the next phase of the Oceans Protection Plan, Fisheries and Oceans Canada is expanding its oil spill research program to address knowledge gaps, develop improved spill response strategies, and increase collaboration with partner agencies.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada has created an international network of oil spill response experts and done extensive research on specific oil types and oil spill behaviour under different environmental conditions. They have also assessed the biological effects of oil on aquatic life and potential mitigation measures to reduce its impacts.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada will maintain partnerships with this international network of oil spill response specialists and expand in-house research and science advisory activities to provide Canada with world-class evidence on the best technologies to respond to oil spills based on specific and unique environmental situations.
