There is often a small window of opportunity to respond effectively to marine emergencies, such as oil spills. To close critical gaps in the marine safety system, the next phase of the Oceans Protection Plan will improve the operational framework to proactively manage marine emergencies.
Creating a national Integrated Marine Response Planning program will build upon lessons learned during previous pilot projects on the West Coast. The new national program will implement a consistent and risk-based marine pollution response planning methodology through collaboration with spill response partners including federal departments, provinces and territories, coastal communities and Indigenous groups.
