The Marine Training Program prepares underrepresented groups, such as Indigenous Peoples, Northerners, and women, for rewarding careers in the Canadian marine industry.
Through the Oceans Protection Plan, Transport Canada has provided funding to four institutions to deliver advanced marine courses and hands-on training at facilities across Canada.
This program benefits underrepresented groups by giving them the skills and training to access new employment opportunities. It also addresses the marine industry’s increasing need for a skilled and diverse workforce.
Under the Marine Training program, hundreds of courses and training sessions have been delivered and over 1,100 students have graduated, finding employment with the Canadian Coast Guard, on cruise ships, with ferry operators, and other leading employers.
Since 2016, the Government of Canada has invested $58 million in the Marine Training Program. The funding supports four partner institutions in delivering marine training courses in a safe and inclusive environment. This program provides training to underrepresented groups, including Indigenous and coastal communities across Canada, ensuring they play a meaningful role in emergency response, waterway management, and marine shipping.
