What type of packaging can be used to transport waste of Class 6.2

There are various types of standardized and non-standardized packagings permitted in Part III of the CAN/CGSB-43.125 standard for the transport of clinical, (bio) medical or regulated medical waste (i.e. waste of Class 6.2). These were formerly referred to as Type 1C packagings.

For example, a packaging for transporting waste of Class 6.2 may consist of:

  • a UN11G fibreboard intermediate bulk container (IBC) with inner liner tested to a Packing Group I or II performance level;
  • a UN1G fibre drum with a leakproof liner tested to a Packing Group I or II performance level;
  • a plastic film bag in a rigid, leakproof, plastic outer packaging; or
  • a plastic film bag in a fibreboard box.

Please consult Part III of CAN/CGSB-43.125 for details on these and all other standardized and non-standardized packagings permitted to transport waste of class 6.2.

What type of packaging can be used to transport solid medical waste of Category A which is assigned to UN3549*?

The packaging requirements for UN3549* were introduced into the 2021 edition of the CAN/CGSB-43.125 standard. A person transporting solid medical waste of Category A under this classification must follow the packaging requirements prescribed within Part III of CAN/CGSB-43.125. The packaging consists of a triple packaging system.

*Transport Canada will soon be introducing the new UN3549 classification into the TDG regulations.

Must I register packaging for waste of Class 6.2?

No. Packagings for waste of Class 6.2 do not need to be registered with Transport Canada. However, if components of the packagings are themselves UN standardized containers (eg. a UN IBC or a UN fibreboard box), these containers must be designed, constructed and manufactured in accordance with all applicable standards, including registration.

How do I identify a packaging for waste of Class 6.2?

There is no unique compliance marking specifically prescribed for a packaging for waste of Class 6.2. If a component of this type of packaging is a UN standardized means of containment (for example, a UN IBC or UN drum), that component will have a UN marking. A packaging for waste of Class 6.2 will not have a UN marking if it is comprised of non-standardized means of containment (for example, a plastic bag in a rigid, leakproof, outer packaging).

Where can I get a packaging for waste of Class 6.2?

Transport Canada does not have a list of vendors for packagings permitted in Part III of the CAN/CGSB-43.125 standard because many different types of standardized and non-standardized packagings are permitted.
