How this technology works
Automatic emergency steering uses sensors to detect potential collisions with a vehicle ahead and automatically steers the vehicle to avoid a collision or make it less severe. Some systems may also detect pedestrians or other objects.
Some systems can help steer when the drivers steering isn't enough to avoid a collision. Others can help steer even if a driver doesn't move the steering wheel to avoid a collision.
Automatic emergency steering is an active safety system that the driver doesn't have to turn on. Drivers can take over the automatic steering by turning the steering wheel. Systems can be switched off at times, but they will be automatically activated again the next time the vehicle starts.
