Rear-occupant alert systems

How this technology works

A visual displaying a rear seat alert appearing on a car dashboard.
Description

Once the ignition is switched off, the system can display a visual alert to remind the driver to check the back seat of the vehicle.

A rear-occupant alert system is a safety feature that alerts a driver to check the back seat of their vehicle.

These systems can help reduce the number of babies and children who are injured or killed by being left alone in a hot vehicle.

Although these systems vary by car manufacturer, there are basically 2 types of systems:

  • door logic systems, and
  • occupant monitoring systems

The door logic systems note when a rear door is opened before or during a trip. When the ignition is turned off, the system may display a visual alert or make a sound to remind you that the rear door was recently opened.

Occupant monitoring systems rely on cameras and other sensors to detect someone in the back seat after a vehicle has been locked.

If the system detects that you've left an occupant in the vehicle, it can alert you by sending your phone a notification and turning on the A/C to cool the car and reduce the risk of heatstroke.

Operation

Most rear-occupant alert systems are automatically turned on by the manufacturer. However, you should check with your manufacturer to see if you need to manually activate this feature.

You can often disable these systems by either pressing a button in the vehicle or choosing an option on the vehicle's touchscreen.

Things to keep in mind

  • Car makers can tell you whether they offer this feature on their vehicles
  • These systems are designed to help you remember if there's someone in the back seat of the vehicle. They aren't meant to replace your attention and judgment. You should always check your backseat prior to leaving your vehicle
  • Read your owner's manual to learn about your vehicle's system, including its abilities and limits
