Rear cross traffic warning

How this technology works

Rear cross traffic warning is a safety system that helps you detect cars that might be crossing your path while you back out of places like parking spots. These systems detect if a vehicle is approaching you on either side when you're backing up and warn you with sounds and visual alerts. Some systems also warn you about pedestrians or cyclists.

Operation

These systems automatically turn on when you put your vehicle in reverse.

Description

A car that is backing out of a parking space is alerted and when its sensors detect another vehicle passing behind it.

Things for drivers to keep in mind

  • The system may not be able to detect or warn you about fast moving vehicles behind you
  • This system does not replace careful driving
    • Drive carefully in reverse
    • Watch for traffic and pedestrians, use your mirrors, make shoulder checks, and reverse slowly
  • Don't rely on the system to detect pedestrians or small children
    • Stay alert when you drive in reverse, especially when small children could be in the area
  • You should read your owner's manual to learn about your vehicles systems, including its capabilities and limits
