Aeroplane certified CO₂ emissions evaluation metric value database

The database provides CO2 emissions evaluation metric values in kg/km (CO2 MV)  for aeroplanes certified or validated by Transport Canada. These values are established using the methodology specified on the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 16 Volume III and ICAO Environmental Technical Manual Volume III (Doc 9501). The CO2 MV is not intended for the estimation of actual cruise fuel consumption over any specific distance.

The CO2 MV is determined during the certification or validation of an aeroplane. It is a specific air range (SAR)-based metric adjusted by a dimensionless Reference Geometric Factor (RGF). The SAR is the distance an aeroplane can fly in specified reference conditions. The RGF is the external planform area of the pressurized cabin, excluding the cockpit, divided by the unit of area to form a dimensionless factor.

The CO2 MV aims at measuring the technology (structural, propulsion, aerodynamic) performance of an aeroplane type with respect to its fuel efficiency. During certification, Transport Canada compares the CO2 MV to the applicable limit defined by ICAO in Annex 16 Volume III.

Transport Canada requires certification to the ICAO CO2 standard for subsonic jet and propeller-driven aeroplanes that fall into the applicability criteria of ICAO Annex 16 Volume III, Part II, Chapter 2.1. That criteria take in consideration the aeroplane maximum take-off mass, date of application for type certificate and passenger capacity.

The publication of the database fulfils the requirement for Canada’s certificating authority to publish the certified CO2 MV granted or validated. Transport Canada will add aeroplanes to this database as soon as it completes each CO2 certification.
