Canada has introduced new regulations for piloting drones that weigh 250 gramsg up to 25 kilogramskg, are operated within visual-line-of-sight, and are used for any purpose, whether it is for fun, work or research.
Maple leaf appears and a drone flies across screen. An infographic appears around the maple leaf with icons for: weight, visual line of sight, and purpose.

The new regulations apply to 2 categories of operations:
Category 1: basic operations
If all 3 of the following conditions are met, you are conducting basic operations:
1. Your flight is in uncontrolled airspace.
2. Your drone is more than 100 feet or 30 metres horizontally from bystanders - this means any person who is not involved in the operation of the drone.
And 3. Your drone is never flown over bystanders.
A person flying a drone appears in a rural landscape. Then bystanders appear in the distance and the drone avoids flying near/over these bystanders. Dotted lines appear with the text “100 feetft/30 metresm” beside the bystanders to show that the drone is maintaining the appropriate distance.

1. Basic operations
1) flight is in uncontrolled airspace
2) more than 30 metres (100 feet) from bystanders
3) never over bystanders
Category 2: advanced operations
If any of the following 3 conditions are met, you are conducting advanced operations:
1. Your flight is in controlled airspace.
2. Your drone is within 100 feet or 30 metres of bystanders.
Or 3. Your drone is flown over bystanders.
A new person is flying a drone in an urban park landscape. Bystanders appear in the park and the drone flies near the bystanders and then the drone flies over bystanders.
Text on screen:
2. Advanced operations
1) flight is in controlled airspace
2) within 30 metres (100 feet) from bystanders
3) flown over bystanders
And not all drones are fit for advanced operations, so make sure your drone is eligible.
A drone appears in front of a red “no symbol” with an arrow pointing to an icon of an incomplete checklist that has a “red X” on it. Then a new drone appears in front of a green circle with an arrow pointing to a complete checklist with green checkmark on it.

Both the basic and advanced categories have their own set of easy-to-follow rules that require the pilot:

Pilot
- to be a minimum age (14 years-old for Basic and 16 for Advanced), otherwise they must be supervised while flying
A calendar icon with the text “minimum age” appears as a branch off of the pilot icon in the centre.

Age 16 for advanced operations
- to register their drone and mark the drone with its registration number
A drone icon with the text “register drone” appears as another branch off of the pilot icon in the centre. A drone flies into the scene and the registration number on the drone is magnified.

- to pass a knowledge test and get a pilot certificate for the category of operation (either Basic or Advanced)
A clipboard icon with the text “get certificate” appears as another branch off of the pilot icon in the centre.
Text on screen:
Pass knowledge test
- to stay below an altitude of 400 feet above ground level
An altitude icon with the text “below 400 feetft” appears as another branch off of the pilot icon in the centre.

- to stay away from air traffic and airports
A distance icon with the text “distance” appears as another branch off of the pilot icon in the centre.

A Special Flight Operations Certificate is only required for pilots whose operation (whether commercial or recreational) is not covered by the new regulations.
