Increasing scientific support to respond to environmental emergencies

In an environmental emergency, Environment and Climate Change Canada coordinates federal science data and advice on sensitive ecosystems and wildlife, which helps guide the on-the-ground response to protect the environment. To do this work, the department relies on many experts, including biologists, chemists, meteorologists, analysts, researchers, enforcement officers, and environmental emergency officers.

Through the Oceans Protection Plan, Environment and Climate Change Canada increased its ability to prepare for and respond to environmental emergencies. The department strategically invested in its ability to support marine incident response 24/7 anywhere across Canada, and keep polluters accountable for their actions.

In the next phase of the Oceans Protection Plan, this initiative will improve Environment and Climate Change Canada’s response by expanding its ability to detect pollution events, providing oil spill modelling, delivering training for emergency preparedness and response, and increasing its enforcement capacity.
