Shipping in the Arctic is challenging. The warm-weather shipping season is short, sealift infrastructure is scarce and northern communities are difficult to access. Yet, many communities in Canada’s Arctic rely on goods delivered by sea because it is more affordable than goods delivered by plane.
Through the Oceans Protection Plan, the Government of Canada invested in safety equipment and marine infrastructure to improve critical sealift and resupply operations in over 20 Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Nunavik and Nunatsiavut communities.
During the next phase of the Oceans Protection Plan, the Safety Equipment and Basic Marine Infrastructure in Northern Communities Initiative will continue to invest in this critical infrastructure, making resupply and sealift operations safer across Canada’s North.
