ABSTRACT:
This report provides a high level description of statistical data issues facing the Canadian federal government that could have implications for governance of the transportation sector. It includes a brief description of the recent history of federal transportation data collection, and an analysis of the current data gaps for various components of the transportation sector (as well as a comparison to United States federal transportation data collection). A number of considerations related to the implementation of data collection programs were discussed, for example, legislation and regulations which restrict sharing of information; confidentiality requirements; challenges associated with surveys and multi-modal data needs; lack of sufficient trade data; timeliness and accuracy of data; commodity identification; etc. Based on these considerations, the author provides an analysis of four possible options for the development of a federal integrated data platform.
