Meet Derrick!

Aviation is such a good fit for me,I just feel at home around it. Andwhen I'm around airplanes, I just feel like a kid.

Growing up, small town, on the north coast of Labrador, aviation was a huge part of it. And that's what you did if you went to the hospital, you got on a plane. If you wanted to go visit your family or another community, you got on a plane. It was sort of woven into the fabric of what we did as we lived life.

My name is Derek Flynn, Transport Canada, Civil Aviation, Flight Operations.

Thunder Bay offers a really unique opportunity for a Transport Canada inspector. We live and operate out of Thunder Bay airport, and I mean, the local area is just breathtaking.

I work with industry to ensure, that they are compliant with the Canadian aviation regulations. But we also have a component of service. So, we do help people and companies navigate through any changes within their organization.

That's the crux of our job, making sure they're compliant and they're well-run. A well-run organization is going to be safe.

There's small companies out there with just a few people. There’s larger companies with, you know, 300 employees. And engaging with those people is fantastic. That's what gets me out of bed in the morning.

Apart of my background includes owning a small airline. So, with a small air taxi operation in Northwestern Ontario. And I think that that gave me a real good grounding and base for, what exactly these, the people are going through. I think I can really connect with them on that level.

My company used to serve the remote northern communities in Northwestern Ontario. And my role now is serving the air operators that serve those communities. And I do get a chance to go up and meet some of the people that I knew in the past, which is a nice little side benefit of this job.

This is a fantastic place to land your feet. You're going to use every bit of knowledge and experience that you've gained from industry, and you'll learn a lot more.
