Protecting Canada’s Oceans and Waterways

Transcript

Marine shipping is a cornerstone of Canada’s economy, providing Canadians with the goods they use every day while creating thousands of jobs. The Government of Canada ensures shipping is safe and our oceans and marine life are protected by:

  • Monitoring ship traffic by air and sea
  • Enforcing strict regulations and applying new technology to prevent and respond to marine incidents
  • Making polluters pay for spills
  • Having experienced marine pilots guide large ships on busy waterways
  • Protecting marine ecosystems and mammals
  • Developing marine job-training programs
  • Partnering with Indigenous Peoples and coastal communities, marine industry stakeholders, and scientists to keep Canada’s marine safety system world-class.

These are some of the ways we advance marine safety and protect Canada’s coasts and waterways for future generations.
