Notice – New editions of CSA B620, B621 and B622 are published

New editions of the following standards have been developed by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Technical Committee on highway tanks and TC portable tanks for the transport of dangerous goods, and were published on 19 November 2020:

CSA B620:20 “Highway tanks and TC portable tanks for the transportation of dangerous goods”.
CSA B621:20 “Selection and use of highway tanks, TC portable tanks, and other large containers for the transportation of dangerous goods, Classes 3, 4, 5, 6.1, 8, and 9”.
CSA B622:20 “Selection and use of highway tanks and TC portable tanks for the transportation of dangerous goods, Class 2”.

Coming into force

In accordance with Section 1.3.2 of the TDG Regulations, these newly published standards come into force on 31 May 2021, however, stakeholders may begin transitioning to these new standards at any time before this date.

Most notable changes

The most notable changes that appear in the new editions of these standards are summarized below:

CSA B620

  • Updated ASME code, which is dynamically referenced to the latest edition of the ASME code
  • Revised tank securement requirements for all tanks
  • Revised damage protection requirements for TC 331, TC 338 and TC 341 tanks
  • Revised internal inspection and pressure test interval from 5 years to 10 years for certain TC 331 tanks in dedicated propane service.
  • Reintroduced TC 51 portable tanks with updated requirements
  • Revised insulation requirements for TC 423 tanks
  • Improved pressure gauge selection and calibration requirements for pressure and leakage tests
  • Revised thickness testing requirements
  • Revised pressure testing requirements
  • Revised inspection and test report requirements
  • Updated Tank Inspector and Tank Tester training and qualification requirements
  • Added Training Organization registration for qualification of Tank Inspectors and Tank Testers

CSA B621

  • Removed diesel fuel limitation for non-rectangular TC44. They are now permitted for transport of other dangerous goods, similar to TC 406 and equivalent tanks.
  • Revised requirements for tanks with an intermediate bulkhead
  • Added emergency shutoff marking requirements for manually activated remote shutoff devices
  • Improved usability of selection and use tables
  • Clarified chock block requirements. At least two chock blocks are now required when using chock blocks to prevent unintended vehicle movement

CSA B622

  • Revised internal inspection and pressure test interval from 5 years to 10 years for certain TC 331 tanks in dedicated propane service.
  • Revised emergency discharge control of tanks in compressed liquefied gas service (Not including class 2.2) – all tanks with a 5 year phase in period
  • Revised and updated nurse tank and nurse tank piping requirements for the agricultural sector
  • Improved usability of selection and use tables
  • Clarified chock block requirements. At least two chock blocks are now required when using chock blocks to prevent unintended vehicle movement
  • Added emergency shutoff marking requirements for manually activated remote shutoff devices
  • Revised tank securement requirements for portable tanks that are loaded while on vehicle. It shall be designed by a Professional Engineer.
