This document does not change, create, amend or suggest deviations to the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations (TDG Regulations).
The purpose of this document is to provide information on the use of shipping names: UN1759 CORROSIVE SOLID, N.O.S. and UN1760 CORROSIVE LIQUID, N.O.S., and to indicate which alternate shipping names should be used.

Background
Although the general shipping names UN1759 CORROSIVE SOLID, N.O.S. and UN1760 CORROSIVE LIQUID, N.O.S. are found in Schedule 1 of the TDG Regulations, they should no longer be used since more precise shipping names have been added for corrosive substances of Class 8.
Section 2.4 of the TDG Regulations states that for substances that are included in only one class and one packing group, the shipping name in Column 2 of Schedule 1 that most precisely describes the dangerous goods and is most consistent with the class and the packing group must be selected as the shipping name.
Your responsibilities as a consignor
If you are a consignor, you must find the shipping name that best describes the dangerous goods you are shipping. There are three pieces of information you need to know on the composition and the properties of a corrosive substance to pick the best shipping name from the list of options.
You'll need to know if the substance is:
- acidic or basic
- organic or inorganic
- liquid or solid
N.O.S. shipping names options
For corrosive substances of Class 8, there are many general N.O.S. shipping names, that are more precise than:
- UN1759

- UN3261 CORROSIVE SOLID, ACIDIC, ORGANIC, N.O.S.
- UN3262 CORROSIVE SOLID, BASIC, INORGANIC, N.O.S.
- UN3263 CORROSIVE SOLID, BASIC, ORGANIC, N.O.S.
