About the council
In November 2013, the Minister of Transport asked the Transportation of Dangerous Goods General Policy Advisory Council to provide short and long-term recommendations aimed at enhancing public safety and strengthening standards for the transportation of dangerous goods.
The Transportation of Dangerous Goods General Policy Advisory Council provides Transport Canada with advice on all matters related to the transportation of dangerous goods. Members of the council represent the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, labour unions, and a variety of industry associations, including manufacturers, consignors, carriers, shippers and consignees.
Three industry-led working groups were created to examine classification, emergency response, and means of containment.
On January 31, 2014, the working groups provided their reports containing recommendations for the Minister of Transport. The department is reviewing these recommendations on an expedited basis to determine what action can be taken to further protect public safety. Transport Canada continues to work with all its stakeholders, including officials in the United States, as we look together to develop options for a North American solution.
