World Oceans Day: Take the shoreline clean-up pledge with us!

OPP Communications team member Alana McFarlane

Now recognized internationally, the concept for World Oceans Day was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada's International Centre for Ocean Development and the Ocean Institute of Canada at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. More than two decades later, it’s recognized in over 140 countries, bringing together a network of hundreds of thousands of people and businesses, and their efforts to advance the health of our oceans.

Over the course of June, Ocean Wise is holding shoreline clean-ups across Canada, where volunteers chip in and start cleaning up plastics around our shorelines. Preventing litter from entering, or re-entering, our waters is critical for protecting our oceans.

Check out this page to see if a shoreline cleanup is happening near you! If not, you can host your own!

Transport Canada’s OPP Communications Team is committed to this cause. We are pledging to do our own individual parts and spend one hour, this June, retrieving litter along waterways near us. We’re asking our readers if they can do the same! Together, we can make a difference as both individuals and OPP partners in protecting our oceans.
