Everyone who operates a power-driven boat in Canada needs proof of competency —something that shows they understand the rules of the water and how to safely operate a boat.

There are many different valid proofs of competency – the most common being the Pleasure Craft Operator Card. This can be obtained after passing an accredited boating safety test. And if you completed a boating safety course before April 1, 1999 you’re also covered.

If you don’t already have your Pleasure Craft Operator Card, visit the Transport Canada website to find out where you can take an accredited boating safety course or test in your area.

Once you get your Pleasure Craft Operator Card, it’s good for life. Carry it on you whenever you’re on the water. Be prepared, know the rules, and be safe!
