Bulletin No.: 09/1988

Date (Y-M-D): 1988-05-06

Subject: A Potential Safety Hazard that May Exist with the Mountings of Shipboard Cranes

  1. The purpose of this Bulletin is to draw attention to a potential safety hazard that may exist with the mountings of shipboard cranes.
  2. A large scale defect was recently discovered involving "FUKUSHIMA" shipboard cranes. In this case, a considerable number of bolts on the crane mountings were loose and some bolts were cracked and pitted. These cranes had been in service for less than two years.
  3. The loss of load sharing in the bolts and their reduced fatigue life, due to loss of preload, seriously impaired the safety of the mountings and hence the ability of the cranes to lift their rated loads.
  4. The manufacturer of the cranes in question has been advised of the problem, but it is strongly recommended that mountings of all shipboard cranes, particularly those manufactured by FUKUSHIMA, be thoroughly examined on a regular basis.
