Subject: Computer and The Year 2000

Attention is being drawn to the fact we are approaching the turn of the century and computer installations aboard ship may cease to function correctly.

If your computer is a PC , the following test will help you to know if it is year 2000 compliant.

  1. In the DOS mode type in DATE;
  2. If the current date displayed is in the eight digit format (the format mm-dd-yyyy) your computer is probably YEAR 2000 compliant; and
  3. If the data on your computer is stored as six digits your data base will be missing the century prefix and you will have to convert the data base to hold eight digits or you will have to insert in the programs a test such as the following to determine if the century is 19 or 20 i.e.:

    If year is > 50 make the century 19 otherwise make century 20.

    Also make sure your database and programs will allow hold two 00 in the (yy) characters.

Check your vendors hot line with the version of the software or with the manufacturer to verify if your system will continue to function in the next century.
