Bulletin No.: 11/1997

Date (Y-M-D): 1997-10-14

Subject: Standard Type Lifejacket Lifting Loop

The Standard for Life Jackets, Inherently Buoyant, Standard Type 65-GP-14 does not require that lifejackets constructed against this standard be equipped with a lifting loop to facilitate rescue of a person in water.

However, it has recently been brought to our attention that models 911 (adult size) and 912 (children size) of Standard type lifejackets from Protexion Products Inc. were constructed with a lifting loop. The test conducted on model 911 has shown that this strap cannot support the weight of the full range of population that the jacket is intended to cover and therefor could be more dangerous than helpful. It could also damage the cover fabric.

The piece of webbing on the top of the jacket is not adequate as a lifting loop and to prevent its use as such, it is to be removed. Special care should be exercised in order not to damage the cover fabric in any way during removal of the loop.
