Subject: Moving Machinery Hazards

A recent fatal accident aboard a fishing vessel has been found to be due to the victim's clothing being caught in the rotating main machinery shaft coupling.

Ship owners and operators are once more reminded of the need for care when working near moving machinery (See Ship Safety Bulletin 9/83).

It is strongly recommended that all ships carry at least one copy of Transport Canada's Publication "Personal Safety on Ships", TP-5021 for the perusal of all ship staff.

Attention is also drawn to Sections 7 and 20 of the Safe Working Practices Regulations covering protection against moving machinery hazards; these Regulations apply to all Canadian ships.
