Subject: Flashlight Batteries

  1. Mariners are reminded that flashlight batteries have the potential to deteriorate and leak acid.
  2. During a recent inspection of Lifesaving Equipment it was found that acid leaking from D cell batteries had extensively damaged pyrotechnic distress signals stored in the same watertight container.
  3. The damage to the distress signals was so extensive that they were completely unusable.
  4. Batteries should be of a leakproof type and as far as possible should not be stored with other equipment or food.
  5. Batteries should be replaced at frequent intervals and equipment stored in containers should also be inspected frequently.
