Ship Safety Bulletins (SSB)
Date (Y-M-D): 1988-09-06
Subject: Flashlight Batteries
- Mariners are reminded that flashlight batteries have the potential to deteriorate and leak acid.
- During a recent inspection of Lifesaving Equipment it was found that acid leaking from D cell batteries had extensively damaged pyrotechnic distress signals stored in the same watertight container.
- The damage to the distress signals was so extensive that they were completely unusable.
- Batteries should be of a leakproof type and as far as possible should not be stored with other equipment or food.
- Batteries should be replaced at frequent intervals and equipment stored in containers should also be inspected frequently.
