Before you apply

Before you apply, use the Project Review Tool to determine whether:

  • your work will be located on a waterway listed on the Schedule
  • your work may interfere with navigation or not
  • your project is categorized as a major or minor work

Documents you need to apply

For each application, you will be required to provide:

  • a map showing the work’s exact location
  • the legal site description and position of the work in latitude and longitude
  • the plan view drawings (top down) with all related dimensions, including as applicable:
    • overall length and width of work
    • distance from adjacent property lines
    • distance from adjacent works
    • if offshore, distance from surrounding shorelines
    • any planned temporary works to be used
  • the profile view drawings (side view) with all related dimensions, including as applicable:
    • reference water level
    • height of work above water level,
    • if a submerged work, the height of the work from the bed of the waterway
    • depth of water at location of work
    • any planned temporary works to be used
  • a general arrangement drawing (depicting new and entire existing work, if applicable)
  • a detailed project description, including:
    • an explanation of the construction methods the project will use, including any temporary works that may be used, where they will be placed, and the expected duration of their placement
    • the expected start and end dates
    • Any known impacts or interruptions to navigation that will occur during or after construction of your work, and proposed mitigation measure

An application for an exemption, must include:

  • a project description
  • an explanation of how the project will impact navigation and a description of alternatives
  • consultation information
  • environmental assessment
  • a rationale that explains why you believe you need an exemption

The exemption process considers all relevant facts, not just those that relate to navigation. You may need extra information to develop the evidence to support an application for an exemption. Find out more about the information requirements to apply for an exemption.
