Issue No. 3 – July 2022

The latest information to keep you informed on the Lac-Mégantic rail bypass project.

A message from the Minister of Transport

Dear Residents of Lac-Mégantic, Nantes and Frontenac,

I am pleased that many of you attended the Open House held in June, and I hope you enjoyed the time spent with the experts and that they answered your questions about the project.

From the beginning, this project has been about helping the community recover from the tragedy, and we want to do it right.

We want to continue the dialogue with all of you, and our partners, throughout the project. In response to concerns raised, we will soon be holding another public consultation, this time on the project’s potential impacts on groundwater and wetlands, and on measures that will be implemented to mitigate impacts on the environment and residents.

We will continue to work hard to complete the project and answer your questions. Respect for communities and the environment is my top priority. I can assure you that the future rail bypass will be safe and that several measures will be taken to reduce environmental impacts.

This project continues to be a top priority for the Government of Canada.

Yours sincerely,

The Honourable Omar Alghabra
Minister of Transport

Public consultation on the project’s potential impact on groundwater and wetlands

Transport Canada will hold a public consultation on the findings of the Hydrogeological Study and the Environmental Effects Evaluation report Effects Evaluation, which will include the measures taken to mitigate the project’s potential impacts. Residents will be able to view the documents on our website starting at the end of August and will have the opportunity to ask questions during in-person and virtual and virtual information sessions in September. Residents will be able to provide written comments and concerns. All comments received will be used to prepare to prepare a consultation report that will be submitted to the Canadian Transportation Agency. Details on the consultation will be available on our website. View the project webpage at https://tc.canada.ca/en/rail-transportation/lac-megantic-rail-bypass

Update – Land surveying

In May, we informed you that the Ecce Terra firm would be doing staking and marking on the properties of the owners involved in the project. The surveyors began their work in the Nantes area and moved east to cover the Lac-Mégantic and Frontenac areas. This work was done in response to the landowners’ request to better understand the rail bypass route. The work is now complete.
