Response to audits conducted by the Office of the Auditor General of Canada (including audits conducted by the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development)
Spring 2017 Reports of Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development Report 6, Civil Aviation Infrastructure in the North – Transport Canada
This audit examined whether Transport Canada assessed and addressed civil aviation infrastructure needs in Canada's North. It focused on remote northern communities that are accessible year round by air only and the 118 airports that service these communities, none of which are owned or operated by Transport Canada.
The audit found that infrastructure needs at remote northern airports are a long-standing issue and that the Department did not take the lead in addressing this issue. Although funding has been provided for safety-related infrastructure needs through the Department's Airports Capital Assistance Program, the audit notes that the funding sources address only some of the unique challenges facing remote northern airports.
In response to the audit's two recommendations, Transport Canada continues to work with territorial governments, other government departments and stakeholders to identify priorities for northern transportation infrastructure and to determine priority investments.
