Issue:
5514KM Corporation and Transport Canada wish to inform the public of discrepancies between the height ranges indicated on the booster seat labelling and in the instruction manual. Specifically, some labels on the affected booster seats and certain sections in the instruction manual indicate a minimum height of 40 inches (102 cm), while others indicate a minimum height of 42 inches (107 cm). In addition, there are some translation errors between the English and French manuals.
The correct minimum height for these seats is 42 inches (107 cm).
Safety Risk:
Transport Canada’s compliance inspection program revealed these errors and notified the company. While these errors can cause confusion, there are no safety risks associated with the incorrect minimum height labelling, as long as the booster seat is correctly installed and the vehicle seat belt is able to be correctly positioned around the child as indicated in the instruction manual (the vehicle lap belt must be low on the child’s hips, contacting the thighs and the vehicle shoulder belt should contact the child’s chest and be centered on the child’s shoulder). Users should also ensure that the correct weight and height range requirements of the booster seat are respected.
There have been no reported injuries associated with the incorrect height requirements on the labelling and in the instruction manual.
Company Action:
5514 KM Corporation will contact all registered owners with instructions on how to obtain the corrected labels and manuals, free of charge.
Consumer Recourse:
Parents and caregivers can continue to use the affected seats safely. All non-registered consumers or consumers who have moved are encouraged to contact the 5514 KM Corporation by email or phone for instructions on obtaining the revised labels and manuals. The affected seats should not be returned to retailers or the company.
Consumers should also note that the label indicating the manufacturer contact information and the expiry date of the booster seat is located under the fabric cover, as shown below:
