Britax Child Safety, Inc. and Transport Canada wish to inform the public that there is a potential for one side of the shoulder harness to become detached from the yoke on the back of the child/booster seat when loosening the harness to remove a child.

Safety Risk:

Should one side of the shoulder harness become detached and not be detected by the parent, the harness would not securely restrain a child in the child/booster restraint system in the event of a collision. As with all child restraint systems, when buckling up the child, the harness should always be tested for tightness. Any detachment would be obvious at that point in time.

Background and Company Action:

Transport Canada received two complaints concerning this problem. Britax Child Safety Inc has received approximately 34 complaints on general harness problems. When the parents tightened the harness then checked the tightness, it was apparent that one of the shoulder harness straps was loose. Britax Child Safety, Inc was informed of this problem immediately. Effective September 15, 2008 Britax Child Safety, Inc has modified the harness system by stiffening the harness loop that attaches to the yoke, reducing the possibility of detachment.

Britax Child Safety, Inc has successfully developed and tested rubber caps that are to be placed on the end of the metal harness yoke, which will prevent the harness from detaching.

Consumer Recourse:

Britax Child Safety, Inc. will supply the rubber caps free of charge to all registered owners of the Frontier child/booster restraint system. Should a consumer not be registered with the company, the rubber caps will be provided, free of charge, by calling the toll free number (1-888-427-4829).
