Issue:
Britax Child Safety, Inc. and Transport Canada wish to inform the public of a non-compliance with Motor Vehicle Restraint Systems and Booster Cushions, Safety Standard 213 – Child Restraint Systems, Schedule 3(6). The standard states that the head contactable area of a restraint must be covered in an energy-absorbing material. The Frontier XT child/booster seats do not contain a sufficient amount of energy absorbing material to comply with the standard.
Safety Risk:
There is a potential safety risk, that in the case of a very severe frontal collision, the head of the child could violently contact the insufficiently padded back of the child/booster seat. However, there have been no consumer reports of head injuries related to this product in Canada or the U.S. to date.
Background and Company Action:
Britax Child Safety, Inc. received a call from a consumer on March 04, 2010 inquiring about the perceived difference in the foam thickness between the older Frontier model and the new Frontier XT. Britax reviewed the specifications and determined that the foam in the Frontier XT would not meet the requirements of the standards. Transport Canada was immediately informed of the non-compliance and the remedy.
Consumer Recourse:
All registered owners and retail outlets with affected inventory will be sent a repair kit, which will include energy absorbing-foam and instructions for its attachment. Non-registered owners should contact Britax Child Safety, Inc. at their toll free number (1-888-427-4829) to receive a repair kit free of charge.
Given that the risk of injury resulting from this deficiency is considered low, Britax Child Safety Inc. has indicated that the public may continue to use the product until the repair kit is received.
