Date of Manufacture:
Mar 16, 2011

Number of Units:
296

Geographic Distribution:
Across Canada

Problem:

Dorel Distribution Canada ( DDC ) and Transport Canada wish to inform the public that a limited number (296) of Safety 1st OnSide Air LX restraint systems were manufactured with incorrect pads which are missing slow-recovery energy absorbing material.  Furthermore, the air bag warning label affixed to these pads is written in English only.

Safety Risk:

Failure to follow important safety warnings or improper use of the child restraint could result in increased risk of personal injury during a vehicle crash. Safety of the restraint system is not affected when installation instructions as stipulated on the English air bag warning label (which includes a pictogram) and in the bilingual instruction manual are followed.

In addition, this product does not comply with Transport Canada’s safety regulations governing child restraints.  Transport Canada requires that DDC provide affected consumers a replacement pad that contains the energy-absorbing material required by the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards ( CMVSS ).

Background and Company Action:

DDC received a few enquiries from consumers.  Upon investigation, it was determined that the March 16th, 2011 production destined for the Canadian market was manufactured with American pads that do not include the slow-recovery energy absorbing material.

DDC will offer replacement pads to consumers that contact DDC as a result of this Public Notice.

A rectified product can be identified by a bilingual air bag warning label on the pad, plus a coloured dot placed next to the UPC code on the carton and next to the date of manufacture on the product.

Consumer Recourse:

Retailers are instructed to return all affected units to Dorel Distribution Canada for rework.

All registered owners with affected car seats have been sent a letter indicating how to obtain a free pad replacement kit.  Non-registered owners, or owners who have moved, are asked to contact Dorel Juvenile Group toll-free at 1-800-544-1108 between 8 am and 5 pm EST Monday through Friday in order to obtain a free pad replacement kit.
