Problem:
It was reported to Transport Canada that Liquidation World Inc. was importing and selling children’s restraint systems and booster seats from the United States that did not comply with the applicable Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
Background and Company Action:
A consumer in British Columbia purchased one of the travel systems and proceeded to a car seat clinic for an installation check. She was informed by the technician that the infant restraint did not comply with the applicable Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Shortly after this incident was reported, another consumer in Ontario purchased an infant/child seat and reported the missing National Safety Mark to the manufacturer.
This information was forwarded to the importer of these units and Liquidation World was requested to remove all non-complying stock from their stores.
Liquidation World has informed Transport Canada that approximately 145 non-complying units were imported into Canada and sold to Canadian consumers.
Consumer Recourse:
As these units are not certified by their manufacturer as meeting all applicable Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, Transport Canada cannot comment as to the performance of these restraints in the event of a motor vehicle collision. In addition, the use of these restraints in a motor vehicle would be considered illegal under provincial and territorial highway regulations. It is recommended that the owners of these units return these units to Liquidation World for a full refund.
