Issue:
During research testing conducted by Transport Canada, it was found that, in certain situations, when the vehicle’s front seat back is in close proximity to the recommended in-vehicle location of the carrying handle of the Peg Perego SIP infant restraint system, the carrying handle may contact the vehicle seat back in a frontal collision. Should contact between the carrying handle and the vehicle seat back take place, then the carrying handle may rotate upward and there potentially could be a risk of an infant’s head contacting the handle. There have been no reports of any incidents or injury in Canada or the United States related to this potential collision scenario.
Upon receiving this information, Peg Perego performed dynamic testing on the infant restraint system with the carrying handle in different positions to ensure that any movement of the handle during a collision would not affect the performance of the infant restraint system. Through their testing, Peg Perego has determined that the carrying handle can be located in either of two positions while travelling in a vehicle. Position A (original recommended position) is located at the top edge of the infant carrier and Position B is located forward of the carrier and resting on the vehicle’s rear seat back (see diagram below). Position A is suitable when there is clearance between the carrying handle and the vehicle’s front seat back. Position B can be used in all circumstances.
The instruction manual has been revised with the new information and new labelling for the carrying handle is also being made available.
