Road infrastructure cyber security

Road transportation technologies – such as traffic signals, lane controllers, and connected vehicle roadside communications devices - are evolving rapidly. These advancements are helping to improve road safety, enabling new mobility solutions and creating economic opportunities for Canadian businesses. While these innovations can help make the transportation system safer and more efficient, they can also potentially introduce new cyber security vulnerabilities.

The provinces, territories, and municipalities that own and operate, manage, and maintain Canada’s road transportation infrastructure must be equipped to respond to these challenges.

Transport Canada is developing a suite of resources to help Canada’s road authorities and infrastructure owners and operators better understand the potential cyber vulnerabilities of traffic management systems and intelligent transportation systems and -- find ways to reduce them. These resources complement best practices and guidance issued by Public Safety Canada, the Canadian Centre for Cybersecurity, and other trusted organizations.

ITS cyber security communities of practice

Transport Canada is building cyber security communities of practice for leaders and technical practitioners of road authorities and road infrastructure owners or operators. These communities are open to representatives from road authorities in Canada who wish to come together with other practitioners, to share their experiences, learn and improve their cyber security preparedness and resiliency.
