Year of Road Safety

Road Safety affects you and plays an important role in your life. 2011 marks the start of three key road safety initiatives.

The Canadian Global Road Safety Committee, where governments and stakeholders work together to improve national road safety, has declared 2011 to be the National Year of Road Safety in Canada. The year aims to raise public awareness and promote road safety across Canada. Transport Canada (TC) is currently the chair of the CGRSC.

The Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators’ new Road Safety Strategy 2015 outlines the direction of road safety in Canada for the next five years.

The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2011-2020 a Decade of Action for Road Safety

The goal is to raise awareness about road safety throughout the year and help lower road collision, death and injury rates.  To do this, Transport Canada and other road safety organizations are taking action to improve road safety.

Throughout the year, Transport Canada will:

  • Promote the importance of road safety and draw attention to how simple personal choices can make a difference.
  • Keep working with provincial and territorial Governments alongside road safety partners to continue to reduce fatalities and serious injuries caused by collisions on Canada’s roads.
  • Raise public awareness and commitment to road safety.
  • Improve communication, cooperation and collaboration among all stakeholders.
  • Increase availability of road safety data to support future research and evaluation.
  • Provide a platform for activities to support TC’s plan for the Road Safety Strategy 2015.
