September 11, 2001 marked a tragic milestone in aviation history as terrorists crashed planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and in a field in rural Pennsylvania. The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people, including 24 Canadians.
Transport Canada (TC) played a key role in organizing the safe landing and subsequent departure of international flights and ensuring the security of the thousands of passengers stranded in Canada. Significant improvements have been made to Canada's aviation, marine and surface security systems over the past 10 years. Because of that, Canada's transportation network is among the safest and most secure in the world today.
TC remembers this unforgettable date and we invite you to do the same.
