For employers and employees who work on board aircraft while in operation
You, as the employee, have a responsibility to report all accidents, incidents, safety hazards or potential safety hazards in your workplace. This will help make your work place safer.
If you are hurt, or know of a co-worker who is hurt, inform your supervisor right away. They can then take steps to:
- give aid where needed; and
- reduce or eliminate the risk of injury to others.
Injury types could range from minor to more serious, such as disabling, where there may be loss of duty time or physical injury to the body.
Employers, have responsibilities too. Once they become aware of accidents, disease or hazards in the work place, they must:
- keep records of all minor injuries where first aid was given;
- appoint a qualified person to carry out an investigation;
- tell the work place health and safety committee or the health and safety representative about the incident and who will investigate. This will give them a chance to participate in the investigation, as required by the Canada Labour Code, Part II; and
- take steps to prevent a repeat incident.
Employers must also:
- contact their Regional Civil Aviation Safety Inspector, Occupational Health and Safety (CASI-OHS) when an accident or incident results in:
- death;
- disabling injury to two or more employees; or
- a fire or an explosion.
- complete a “Hazardous Occurrence Investigation Report” if the investigation reveals:
- disabling injury;
- loss of consciousness;
- need for emergency procedures such as rescue or revival; or
- a fire or an explosion.
- the employer must then forward:
- the Report to the work place health and safety committee or the health and safety representative without delay.
- a copy of the Report to the Regional CASI-OHS within 14 days of the employer learning about the accident/incident.
