Eligible amateur-built aircraft kits

An amateur-built aircraft is an aircraft the major portion of which a builder constructs or assembles individually, as a unique project, either from raw materials or from a kit.

An aircraft that meets the major portion requirement can be issued a Special Certificate of Airworthiness Amateur-built.

An amateur-built aircraft can be constructed from a kit, and the manufacturers of kits may request that the kit be evaluated against the major portion requirements stated in PART I of Appendix A – Standards of Design and Construction for Amateur-Built Aircraft of the Exemption from section 549.01 of the Canadian Aviation Regulations and Chapter 549 of the Airworthiness Manual – Airworthiness Standards - Amateur-Built Aircraft, dated 2 April, 2009.

(The evaluation is against the major portion requirement only, and should not be taken to mean that a listed kit is otherwise certified or approved by TCCA.)

Below is a list of amateur-built aircraft kits that have been evaluated by Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA) and found to meet the major portion requirement.

The kits included in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Revised Listing of Amateur-Built Aircraft Kits also meet the Canadian major portion requirement.

The inclusion of an amateur-built aircraft kit on this list is not a prerequisite for issuance of a Special Certificate of Airworthiness – Amateur-built”, but an aircraft built from a kit not appearing on this list or the FAA list will be subject to a major portion evaluation as part of the issue of the Special Certificate of Airworthiness - Amateur-built.

If professional assistance is employed in the construction or assembly of the aircraft, a further evaluation of the portion of the aircraft actually constructed by the amateur builder may be required. This is to ensure that the major portion of the aircraft was in fact constructed by the amateur-builder.

The kits included in this list have not been evaluated against the FAA’s major portion requirement.
