About the airport
Port Hardy Airport (YZT) is located at the northeastern end of Vancouver Island. It’s about 10 kilometres east of downtown Port Hardy, the largest northern community on Vancouver Island. The airport is an important transportation hub for the Regional District of Mount Waddington communities.
The Port Hardy Airport first opened in 1943 as the Royal Canadian Air Force Station Port Hardy. It served as a strategic air defense station and an emergency airfield. In 1946, administration of the Port Hardy Airport was transferred to the Department of Transport, now called Transport Canada.
Today, the airport provides regular flights to Vancouver. For travel nearby, charter flights are available through Wilderness Seaplanes. Wilderness Seaplanes offers short connection flights to nearby central communities like Bella Bella, Wuikinuxv Village, and Klemtu.
