PREPARATORY INSTRUCTION

Aim

For the student to learn VOR and ADF orientation and tracking procedures.

Motivation

VOR and ADF are very effective aids to navigation, particularly at night and other circumstances when clearly identifiable landmarks are scarce or hard to verify.

Teaching Points

1. VOR

   Review the practical aspects of:

   1. serviceability checks, station tuning and identification.
   2. establishing the aircraft's position relative to the station.
   3. intercepting a given radial.
   4. tracking inbound on a given radial.
   5. indications of station passage.
   6. tracking outbound on a given radial.
2. ADF

   Review the practical aspects of:

   1. serviceability checks, station tuning and identification.
   2. establishing the aircraft's position relative to the station.
   3. intercepting a given inbound track.
   4. tracking inbound with drift correction.
   5. indications of station passage.
   6. tracking outbound, with drift correction.
3. Other Radio Aids

   Review the practical uses and operation of other radio aids with which the training helicopter is equipped.
