Mandate:

The Communications Branch provides the following key services to Transport Canada:

  • Strategic communications advice and support for external and corporate initiatives
  • Internal and corporate messages
  • Communications products (e.g., news releases, statements)
  • Media relations inquiries and interviews; spokesperson media training
  • Media monitoring and analysis
  • Communications support for the Deputy Minister (events, messages to employees, speaking remarks)
  • Ministerial event support
  • Ministerial speeches
  • Social media
  • Web
  • Creative services (graphic design, video, etc)
  • Public opinion research, consultations/engagement, and advertising

  • News, including social media clipping packages are distributed daily.

Internal/Corporate Communications and Editorial Services

Internal Communications

  • Responsible for communicating with employees through different channels, by keeping the intranet myTC updated and through “TC this week”, the department’s internal weekly emails.
  • Supports the Deputy Minister and his office in communicating to departmental staff, as required, by preparing messages to share through emails or by video.
  • Provides strategic communications advice on corporate issues.
  • Organizes TC-wide events on behalf of the Deputy Minister, such as our TC Talks (all -staff meetings), the Awards of Excellence ceremony and launch of the GCWCC.

Editorial Services and Speeches

  • Prepares speeches/remarks for ministerial announcements, as well as video scripts the Minister may wish to record for events that they cannot attend.

Digital Communications, Outreach and Creative Services

Social Media

  • The point of contact for all social media inquiries.
  • Social media channels are used to communicate transportation safety and security messages, and departmental messages about our policies and programs.

Channels

Web

  • Manages the department’s website (tc.canada.ca) and intranet site (myTC).
  • Ensures compliance with Government of Canada policies and web standards, leads the Transport and Infrastructure theme page and is a key partner for the Travel and tourism page, as part of the government-wide www.canada.ca web presence.

Outreach and Advertising

  • Coordinates Transport Canada’s public opinion research and key consultation activities, including surveys, focus groups, and the Let’s Talk Transportation platform. Also leads the Modern Public Engagement project.
  • Manages the department’s various outreach and advertising initiatives.

Creative Services

  • Provides digital design and video production services, as well as some limited prints.
  • Manages the in-house studio where audio and video productions are recorded. Also offers photography services for key events.
  • Oversees Transport Canada’s visual identity, including the Federal Identity Program (FIP), and coordinates copyright requests.

Regional offices

Regional communications teams report to their Regional Director Generals but collaborate with the HQ communications team. They organize and provide on-site support for ministerial events and announcements.
