I always had an affinity for the water. Growing up, we had small boats in the backyard to go fiddle around with. I grew up on the water.
My name is Mélanie LeBlanc, I’m a Navigation Protection Officer with Transport Canada.
We administer the Canadian Navigable Waters Act, so we look at works that are constructed or built in waterways and we ensure that it is safe for navigation.
You know, my personal journey was I took geography at university. I loved mapping, I love looking at maps and this job brings that.
I love the field aspect of getting out of the office, meeting lots of different people. Sometimes it's a drive to a wharf and sometimes it's a boat ride to go verify a bridge clearance or an aquaculture facility. It brings us to some very remote locations and at the same time it can bring us in the middle of a large city port.
Our work is important because, well, navigation is one of the oldest form of transportation here in Canada. The general public loves to go boating, so it's our job to keep it safe.
